Belfast Hornpipe for solo Penny Whistle or Piccolo & Flute Ensemble (2025)
Belfast Hornpipe for solo Penny Whistle or Piccolo & Flute Ensemble (2025)
A real “crowd-pleaser” arrangement of the Traditional Irish favourite “The Belfast Hornpipe” - made out of three hornpipes - The Boys of Blue Hill, The Harvest Home and The Belfast Hornpipe. The parts for the flute choir look simple, but can be deceptively tricky due to intonation, ensemble and rhythmic clarity challenges! This works best with a Penny Whistle as the solo - but Piccolo also works!
I originally made an arrangement in 2014, then made a revision in 2019, and then following the Piccolo & Low Flutes version that I made (see that version here) I thought I could revise this version a little more to make it more harmonically rich and improve the voice-leading.
Instrumentation:
1 x Solo Penny Whistle/Piccolo
4 x Concert Flutes
2 x Alto Flutes
1 x Bass/Contrabass Flute
This can happily be played by a large ensemble due to the piccolo/whistle pitch range which comfortably soars above the main texture.
